Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned 2021/22 DStv Premiership champions following their goalless draw against Cape Town City FC at Loftus Versfeld a few weeks ago.

The Brazilians have in fact now won more league titles than Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United combined.

A host of records tumbled as Sundowns continued their dominance over local rivals, claiming the top-flight title for a 12th time.

Masandawana only needed to avoid defeat against Cape Town City to take an unassailable lead in the standings which they duly did without too much fuss, but they haven’t taken the foot of the pedal just yet.

On Monday, Mamelodi Sundowns then wrapped up the 2021-22 league season in style as they beat Royal AM 3-2, having led 3-0 at one point.

The result was made all the more impressive as Sundowns confirmed on the eve of the match that they had been hit by a ‘flu outbreak’, with the situation being closely monitored ahead of two key matches.

This Saturday, the league winners are set to tackle Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup final as they go in pursuit of a historic domestic ‘treble’.
