Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 2-0 victory against Chippa United, maintaining their flawless start to the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Aubrey Modiba found the net after 35 minutes, while a Lucas Ribeiro cross inadvertently deflected off Justice Chabalala for an own goal in the 39th minute.

Despite the season being only slightly beyond two weeks old, the Brazilians – whose grip on the last six league titles remains unyielding – already hold a commanding five-point lead atop the standings, though they’ve played one more match than their closest pursuers, SuperSport United.

This triumph further extends Sundowns’ advantage at the summit of the Premiership, amassing 12 points from four outings.

On the contrary, the Chilli Boys find themselves in 12th place, their setback adding to a trio of draws.

After making their comeback to South Africa’s premier football league, Cape Town Spurs experienced a tough blow, suffering their third consecutive loss in the Premiership.

The latest setback came at a sunny Peter Mokaba Stadium as they fell 3-1 to Polokwane City courtesy of an Oswin Appollis brace and a solitary Douglas Mapfumo, propelling Rise and Shine to secure back-to-back victories.

The three points sees the 2022/23 Motsepe Foundation Championship winners climb to third place on the league standings, while Shaun Bartlett’s Spurs charges continue to sink further, now anchored to the bottom in 16th place.

After a five-year hiatus, Spurs made a triumphant comeback to top-flight football, guided by Bartlett in engineering Cape side’s ascent from the lower division.

However, the journey has been far from smooth.

TS Galaxy v Kaizer Chiefs – 15:00

In the inaugural weekend of the 2023/24 season, Spurs faced a setback with a narrow 1-0 defeat against TS Galaxy. Their challenges compounded as they then succumbed 2-0 to Sekhukhune United.

Regrettably, their goal difference now stands at a staggering -5 after just three games played.

Spurs’ first goal of the campaign came against Polokwane courtesy of Khaya Mfecane. He latched onto a parried shot inside the opposition penalty box, and subsequently picked his spot in the back of the net.

Dispelling their three-game scoring drought emerged as the lone beacon of optimism for Bartlett to embrace, while his team now sets its sights on a clash against Chippa United at Athlone Stadium next Friday.

Elsewhere on Saturday, AmaZulu and Richards Bay remain winless after three matches in the PSL after playing to a goalless draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

It was a third consecutive stalemate with no goals for Usuthu with new coach Pablo Franco Martin cutting a frustrated figure on the touchline.

For Richards Bay, it was a first point of the campaign after they suffered losses in their opening two encounters, against SuperSport United and Golden Arrows respectively.

In the late game on Saturday, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 2-0 away win at Chippa United.
