Report: Liverpool believe chance to sign Fabinho heir is over as £40m Al-Ittihad deal nears

Liverpool believe the ship has sailed and Moises Caicedo will be a new Chelsea player so will not target the Brighton & Hove Albion star’s transfer as Fabinho’s replacement.

That is according to The Telegraph, which reports that Al-Ittihad are closing in on a move for Fabinho. The Saudi Pro League club made Liverpool a £40m offer for the 29-year-old late on Friday night. While the Brazil midfielder has also already agreed to lucrative personal terms.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and Anfield chiefs decided to remove Fabinho from Liverpool’s pre-season plans on Saturday as his transfer to Al-Ittihad ramps up. He was due to feature in the club’s mini-training camp. But Fabinho informed Liverpool of his desires to secure the move.

Fabinho told Liverpool that he wants a transfer to Al-Ittihad

Fabinho made Liverpool fully aware of his desire to leave Anfield after Al-Ittihad reached an agreement with his representatives about a transfer. But his exit hinged on the Saudi team’s bid to the Reds, who demanded a reasonable fee for a player they signed for £44m in 2018.

Monaco sold Fabinho to Liverpool five years ago for an initial £39.5m plus add-ons. The 29-cap Selecao star has since secured several pieces of silverware on Merseyside. He lifted the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2020 and the EFL and FA Cups in 2022.

Liverpool are now ramping up the club’s efforts to find a replacement for Fabinho but do not believe a transfer with Brighton for Caicedo is possible. Instead, Anfield chiefs feel that ship has sailed and he is Chelsea-bound. So, Klopp and co are looking into potential alternatives.

Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Caicedo off Brighton, The Telegraph also reports. But the Seagulls are demanding the Blues pay in excess of £100m for the Colombian. They claim Declan Rice’s move from West Ham United to Arsenal set the benchmark for an asking price.
