Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi is likely to get back his Lok Sabha membership soon after Supreme Court stayed his conviction in a 2019 defamation case over his Modi surname remark, sources said. The grand old party urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to restore his membership in the Lower House.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Parliament (MP) in March 2023 after he was convicted in a 2019 criminal defamation case by a Surat Court.

Soon after the Supreme Court ruling, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury met Birla and urged him to restore Gandhi’s membership. The party expressed hope that the Lok Sabha secretariat would soon reinstate Rahul Gandhi as their MP.

Speaking to the media after the top court’s order, Rahul Gandhi said, « Aaj nahi toh kal, kal nahi toh parson sachai ki jeet hoti hai (If not today then tomorrow, if not tomorrow then truth wins). But my path is clear. I have clarity in my mind that what I have to do and what is my work. I thank the people who helped us. I also thank the people for their love and support. »

The Gandhi scion said that he will continue to protect the idea of India. « Come what may, my duty remains the same. Protect the idea of India, » he tweeted.

Come what may, my duty remains the same.

Protect the idea of India.
